In the Capture folder of a Session there is a folder called CaptureOne (no spaces). That same query into a nice database is pretty speedy by comparison. Searching for 3+ stars, or some other bit of metadata across thousands of individual files would be very slow. Catalogs have an efficient database to storing all adjustments and metadata. Tens of thousands of images would choke a session. A few thousand images from a wedding or event work fine. They are not meant to be long running, continuously growing archives. Sessions have some practical limits in terms of performance vs number of images. You can import sessions into catalogs via File > Import Session or File > Import (import files with their adjustments) so they make it easy.ĭo you have to create a new session every time you import? Do you know if I could just create two sessions (one for digital and one for film) and keep importing into those? It is a fast and easy method to sort and narrow down the images before importing them into the master catalog. I use sessions just to ingest from the card, cull through, edit, apply metadata. I moved over 50K images into Capture One into a master catalog. I have used Capture One since version 8.3 in 2014/2015. If you are used to a catalog-based ecosystem and you don't move your images around, a catalog will serve you well. Adding your sessions to a master catalog would provide that. There is no 'All Images' to see across all sessions. And I’m not good with backing things up so if one workflow is easier to back up that’d be helpful.ĭoes anyone have any recommendations on whether sessions of catalogs would be better for me? How should I setup whichever organization system I go with?ĭo you know if I could click on something like “all photos” and see my photos ordered chronologically across all my sessions? Or can you only see photos that are in your current selected session? I’d also like to be able to move my whole workflow to an external hard drive if/when I run out of internal storage. I would like to be able to browse all my digital or film photos in a continuous library organized by date (bonus points if I can even browse my film and digital photos mixed together when needed, though that’s not my main use case). I shoot digital and film (scanned in using my digital camera), and I consider those to largely be two separate workflows. I’m a hobby photographer (I don’t have distinct shoots that I need to share).

But I’m very confused about whether I should setup my workflow using sessions or catalogs, and I was hoping someone here could help.
